Dear alumni,
class members, friends and sponsors,
As we are all
too aware, we are in our 4th week of staying home and social
distancing, but we are happy to continue sharing ways we can remain
connected, take care of ourselves and our community. Every week we
are encouraged by new opportunities with thanks to our alumni - both
LSS and YLSS for all you're doing. And please read ALL the way to the
end. You'll see "The Weight" will be worth it, we promise!
Be safe and
be well - #together we can do this - LSS Cares!

Together We
Can! Teaming up with
SSEF on food
pantry fundraiser
|
LSS is
joining forces with Sandy Springs Education Force (SSEF) led by ED Irene
Schweiger, Class of 2006, 13 LSS alumni board members including chair Heather
Kaufman (2014), past chair Kathy Shapiro (2017) and many alumni and class
volunteers!
We've teamed
up to raise funds and donations for the two PopUP Food Pantries (one is at Lake Sheetz' (2016) Under the Cork Tree) serving Sandy Springs public
school students and families facing serious food insecurity.
100% of your
donation will go to the Pop Up Pantry's with
no service charge and - as a 501 (c)3- your donation through SSEF can
be tax deductible! We'll let you know how much LSS Alumni contribute
and hope to help the pantries surpass their fundraising goal.

Covid-19
Face Shields!
|
Atlanta Face Shields, founded in
March by mechanical engineering students, Max Siedel and Nathan Eads,
with help from former Riverwood classmates including, Jack Buehner
YLSS Class of 2017, are making reusable plastic face shields to protect Georgia
healthcare workers from Covid-19! Using their knowledge of 3D
printing and laser cutters, the team is making the Prusa 3D
printable face shield design approved by the Czech Ministry of Health. This
requires three main components, the plastic face shield itself, the
3D printed frame, and the elastic band that fixes the
shield to the user's head. Each face shield includes a standardized set of
instructions and strict guidelines on how to clean and sterilize the
shield to be safely used numerous times.
The team
first made 500 face shields and with help from corporate partners
with materials, is now on track to produce a total of 7,000!
Check out
their website, designed and maintained by Jack,
(now a freshman at Furman), for more information on ways to help, and
with a link to their GoFundMe site. They are relying entirely on donations.

Getting
Organized!
|
Most, if not
all of us, are working from and/or staying home with blocks of time
we never imagined. And how many of us have thought it's time to get
organized? Leslie Walden (Class of 2019), a
Professional Organizer with an impressive list of corporate clients,
gladly offers these tips to get you started right from home:
1. Maintain a
routine and keep a To Do List - prioritize your list with no more
than 3 tasks to accomplish daily. Record in an electronic calendar or
a paper notebook - just write it down, the act of writing means tasks
are more likely to be done! If it's not accomplished and you still
think it's important, move the task to the next day.
2. Declutter
and clean out just 1 closet or 1 drawer each day, to keep from feeling
overwhelmed. Separate items into different piles to keep, donate (to
CAC), consign etc. Be creative and avoid tossing in the trash if
possible. Label the piles so you remember where to take (or send)
when our daily lives resume.
3. Find a
fun project that you've thought about doing for a long time. Now's
your chance. Pick an on-line course, an on-line exercise class,
research your family history (genealogy sites are free right now) or
catch up with long lost friends.
We'd love to
know what you're doing and if you've started something new. Email
Leslie below - she'll collect the info and we'll share in a future
eblast. It's sure to be interesting.
Last but not
least- Leslie highly recommends this NYTimes bestseller: Tiny
Habits by B.J. Fogg to help us all get started! Fogg is the
founder of Stanford's Behavior Design Lab.

Class of
2020 Reaches Out!
|
The great Class of
2020 continues
to stay connected and make a difference.
Last week they
provided dinner from City BBQ to the Sandy Springs Police Force - it
doesn't hurt that Captain Norm Vik is in the Class:). They also met
for a virtual ZOOM happy hour and are staying in touch through
GroupMe and Facebook.
Environment
Day will occur virtually on Thursday as scheduled with speakers from
Cox, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, and public art. According to
Catherine, the class will continue to adapt to a changing world, and finish the class year in an unorthodox
and still to be determined way. No doubt their resilience will be an
asset as they work in leadership roles in our community!

You have to agree this is worth "The
Weight". Enjoy!
